{"id":10101,"date":"2022-02-01T08:04:16","date_gmt":"2022-02-01T13:04:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.greatflorida.com\/?p=10101"},"modified":"2026-05-12T17:43:45","modified_gmt":"2026-05-12T21:43:45","slug":"law-to-help-eradicate-child-drownings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greatflorida.com\/blog\/2022\/law-to-help-eradicate-child-drownings\/","title":{"rendered":"Law to Help Eradicate Child Drownings"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/drowning\/facts\/index.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a> (CDC), drowning is the leading cause of death in children ages 1-4. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.myflfamilies.com\/childfatality\/stateresults.shtml?minage=0&amp;maxage=18&amp;year=2021&amp;cause=Drowning&amp;prior12=&amp;verified=\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">The Florida Department of Children and Families<\/a> report a macabre new record in 2021 with the most child drownings in 12 years. Last year, a record 96 children drowned in Florida. A new Florida law wants to change that.<\/p>\n<p>Florida\u2019s, \u201cEvery Child a Swimmer,\u201d law will take effect for the 2022-2023 school year. The law requires Florida public schools to ask parents if their child has taken swim lessons. Suggestions include, installing a fence around all sides of the pool. The fence should be at least four feet high with self-closing and self-latching gates. Installing a pool alarm, alerting homeowners when a gate is open. Some pool alarms even monitor activity in the water. An outdoor motion sensing camera is helpful as well. While a pool safety net or pool cover can catch a child.<\/p>\n<p>Consider getting rid of the diving board and pool slides, both are considered a hazard. Also, keep inflatables and pool toys out of the pool when no one is playing with them. Inspect drain covers for suction pressure, they should have an anti-entrapment cover. Pool drains should be rounded with no cracks or missing screws.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t forget about hot tubs, they pose as much of a drowning risk for children as a pool,\u201d says <a _blank=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/dustyns\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dustyn Shroff<\/a>, Vice President of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greatflorida.com\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">GreatFlorida Insurance<\/a>, Florida\u2019s largest independence <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greatflorida.com\/florida-homeowners-insurance\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">homeowners insurance<\/a> agency.<\/p>\n<p>A hot tub cover along with sturdy hand rails and anti-entrapment drain covers can go a long way in keeping children safe.<\/p>\n<p>The most important safety tip for pools and hot tubs, never leave children unattended. Be sure an adult in present and within arm\u2019s reach.<\/p>\n<p>With regards to insurance, if you own a pool, it is recommended to increase your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greatflorida.com\/florida-general-liability-insurance\">liability protection<\/a> to $300,000-$500,000. You might consider purchasing an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greatflorida.com\/florida-umbrella-insurance\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">umbrella policy<\/a> to work with your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greatflorida.com\/florida-homeowners-insurance\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">homeowners insurance<\/a> policy.
