On Monday, Florida\u2019s legislative session ended.<\/p>\n

The hot topic of property insurance<\/a> did not get addressed. \u00a0No major property insurance<\/a> reform bills passed. While many Florida homeowners are experiencing significant premium increases and losing their homeowners insurance<\/a> policies. There is also the troubling issue of failed insurers across the state.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome legislators are hoping for a special session where property insurance is addressed,\u201d says Dustyn Shroff<\/a>, Vice President of GreatFlorida Insurance<\/a>, Florida\u2019s top independent homeowners insurance<\/a> agency.<\/p>\n

However, some minor pieces of legislation passed regarding insurance. Among them is a bill that requires agencies to notify policyholders when an agency is about to close.<\/p>\n

According to the Insurance Journal<\/a>, \u201cIt would also force public adjusters to notify consumers if they want to capture additional living expenses; and would provide employers with credits to reduce penalties for worker\u2019s compensation compliance violations.\u201d<\/p>\n

The following are some of the other issues that passed.<\/p>\n

Abortion- Physicians are banned from providing abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy.<\/p>\n

Budget \u2013 A $112 billion state budget passed. Included in the budget is a funding increase for public schools, pay raises for state employees and a series of sales-tax holidays. In October, drivers will enjoy a month-long gas tax holiday.<\/p>\n

Health Care \u2013 Lawmakers passed a measure to revamp staffing standards in nursing homes.<\/p>\n

Schools \u2013 The financial literacy act will require schools to teach financial information to high school students, including the basics of insurance, money management, credit scores, loan applications and related matters.<\/p>\n

Solar \u2013 The legislation is phasing out Florida\u2019s \u201cnet metering\u201d program which allowed for excess energy produced by renewable energy, mostly rooftop solar, to be sold back to the power grid at the retail rate.<\/p>\n

Lastly, the legislature voted unanimously to make strawberry short cake, Florida\u2019s official dessert. \u201cNo one was going to argue with that sweet piece of legislation,\u201d says Dustyn Shroff<\/a>, Vice President of GreatFlorida Insurance<\/a>, Florida\u2019s largest independent homeowners insurance agency.<\/a><\/p>\n

However, \u201cThe bill raised eyebrows amongst the state\u2019s legion of devoted Key lime pie fans, but sponsor Rep. Lawrence McClure assured worried Floridians that the measure wouldn\u2019t \u2018take the key limelight away from the state pie,\u2019\u201d according to Southern Living<\/a>.<\/p>\n
