Hundreds of thousands of cars are estimated damaged by recent hurricanes. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carfax.com\/press\/resources\/flooded-cars\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Carfax<\/a> estimates that as many as half of flood damaged cars eventually return to the market.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInstead of landing in the scrap yard, they are dried out, cleaned up and put back on the market, reports <a _blank=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/dustyns\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dustyn Shroff<\/a>, Vice President of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greatflorida.com\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">GreatFlorida Insurance<\/a>, Florida\u2019s largest independent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greatflorida.com\/florida-auto-insurance\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">auto insurance<\/a> company.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, flood-damaged cars can be resold in Florida. State law requires the title to be\u00a0branded as flood damaged. Unfortunately, not all states require title branding to protect consumers. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flhsmv.gov\/safety-center\/consumer-education\/consumer-advisory-flooded-vehicles\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Florida Department of Highway Safety Motor Vehicles (DHSMV)<\/a> reports flood damaged\u00a0cars from states without flood branding requirements can be resold in Florida with clean titles. Be suspicious if the deal seems too good, warns Buck with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greatflorida.com\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">GreatFlorida Insurance<\/a>, Florida\u2019s top independent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greatflorida.com\/florida-auto-insurance\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">auto insurance<\/a> agency.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How to spot a flood damaged car <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Check the vehicle\u2019s history- Consumers should take precautions such as getting a history of repairs and checking the VIN number with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carfax.com\/press\/resources\/flooded-cars\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Carfax<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nicb.org\/newsroom\/news-releases\/beware-harvey-flood-damaged-vehicles\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">National Insurance Crime Bureau<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vehiclehistory.gov\/nmvtis_vehiclehistory.html\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">National Motor Vehicle Title Information System<\/a> databases.<\/p>\n<p>Be alert to strange odors- a mold or mildew smell or the strong smell of a cleaning solution or air freshener to mask damage.<\/p>\n<p>Look for stains, mineral deposits or discolored carpet.<\/p>\n<p>Check out door panels to make sure they are not warped.<\/p>\n<p>Inspect for dried mud under the dashboard or where the spare tire is kept.<\/p>\n<p>Examine the exterior for water build-up-such as fogged up headlamps or taillights.<\/p>\n<p>Flood damaged cars are usually sold by private sellers or independent used car dealerships, stick with a reputable car dealership in your area.
