{"id":2387,"date":"2017-11-07T15:58:02","date_gmt":"2017-11-07T20:58:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.greatflorida.com\/blog\/?p=2387"},"modified":"2026-05-12T21:26:55","modified_gmt":"2026-05-13T01:26:55","slug":"florida-blue-halts-coverage-oxycontin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greatflorida.com\/blog\/2017\/florida-blue-halts-coverage-oxycontin\/","title":{"rendered":"Florida Blue halts coverage of OxyContin"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In an effort to fight the opioid epidemic, Florida\u2019s largest health insurance company will stop covering the costs of OxyContin or oxycodone prescriptions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are supportive of the new policy and hope these changes can help reduce the abuse of prescription opioids across the state,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/dustyns\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" =_blank>Dustyn Shroff<\/a>, Vice President of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greatflorida.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GreatFlorida Insurance<\/a>, Florida\u2019s largest independent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greatflorida.com\/florida-healthcare-insurance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">health care insurance<\/a> agency. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greatflorida.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GreatFlorida Insurance<\/a> offers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greatflorida.com\/florida-healthcare-insurance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">health insurance<\/a> through Florida Blue.<\/p>\n<p>Beginning January 1, 2018, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greatflorida.com\/florida-healthcare-insurance\">Florida Blue<\/a> will alternatively cover Xtampza ER. An extended-release version of oxycodone, Xtampza ER is considered an abuse deterrent. \u00a0Resisting crushing and breaking, it cannot\u00a0be snorted or smoked.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.miamiherald.com\/news\/health-care\/article183120836.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">The Miami Herald<\/a> reports, under the new policy, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greatflorida.com\/florida-healthcare-insurance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Florida Blue<\/a> will drop coverage of OxyContin for all group and individual health insurance plans except Medicare Advantage plans. The company says, that policy led to a 20 percent reduction in the use of long-term opioids by members.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn recent years, there has been a dramatic increase in the use of prescription opioids for the treatment of chronic pain resulting in abuse and overdoses,\u201d says Buck of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greatflorida.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GreatFlorida Insurance<\/a>, Florida\u2019s top independent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greatflorida.com\/florida-healthcare-insurance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">health care insurance<\/a> company.<\/p>\n<p>The Miami Herald reports opioids killed 2,538 Floridians and contributed to an additional 1,358 deaths in 2015.<\/p>\n<p>Common prescription opioids include; oxycodone (OxyContin), hydrocodone (Vicodin), morphine and methadone. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/drugoverdose\/opioids\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a>, CDC explains, \u201cPrescription opioids are used to treat moderate-to-severe pain and are often prescribed following surgery or injury or for health conditions such as cancer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In May of this year, Gov. Rick Scott declared the opioid epidemic a public health emergency allowing the state access to over $54 million in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/opioids\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">U.S. Department of Health and Human Services<\/a> grant money to pay for prevention, treatment and recovery services.
