\u201cFloridians have less than a year to get their upgraded driver\u2019s license,\u201d says Dustyn Shroff<\/a>, Vice President of GreatFlorida Insurance<\/a>, Florida\u2019s top independent auto insurance<\/a> agency.<\/p>\n

Beginning
\nOctober 1, 2020, every air traveler must present a REAL ID-compliant driver\u2019s
\nlicense, state-issued enhanced driver\u2019s license, or other
\nacceptable forms of identification, such as a valid passport or U.S. military
\nID, to fly within the United Sates.<\/p>\n

Those
\nwho are unable to verify their identity will not be permitted to enter the
\nTransportation Security Administration (TSA) checkpoint and will not be allowed
\nto fly.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is an important step in enhancing commercial aviation security and we urge travelers to ensure they have compliant documents,\u201d said Acting Secretary for Department of Homeland Security<\/a>, Kevin K. McAleenan. \u201cDHS<\/a> is committed to working with states as they continue their efforts to issue REAL IDs to Americans.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis
\nmight come as a surprise to many, but REAL IDs have been in the making for a
\nwhile,\u201d says Buck, Vice President of GreatFlorida Insurance<\/a>, Florida\u2019s biggest
\nindependent auto
\ninsurance<\/a> agency.<\/p>\n

Passed
\nby Congress in 2005, the REAL ID Act enacted the 9\/11 Commission’s
\nrecommendation that the Federal Government \u201cset standards for the issuance of
\nsources of identification, such as driver’s licenses.\u201d<\/p>\n

DHS reports only 27 percent of Americans own a REAL ID.  How do you know if your ID is acceptable? A
\nREAL ID compliant card in Florida, has a gold star in the upper right-hand
\ncorner.<\/p>\n

In order to get your REAL ID compliant card, Floridians must
\nvisit a DMV office and bring original documents validating their identity,
\nSocial Security number and residential address. If there is no gold star on your
\ndrivers license or ID card, you cannot renew online.<\/p>\n

 Previous driver license and ID cards will still be in use alongside the new credential until replaced or phased out, according to the Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles<\/a>, (FLHSMV).<\/p>\n
