Deer mating and migration season has arrived. Florida
\ndrivers should be aware, the odds of hitting a deer more than doubles during
\nthe months of October, November and December. <\/p>\n

\u201cVehicle repair and medical expenses average into the thousands after an animal- auto collision,\u201d says Dustyn Shroff<\/a>, Vice President of GreatFlorida Insurance<\/a>, Florida\u2019s top independent auto insurance agency.<\/a><\/p>\n

Most animal-car collisions are preventable. Listed are some tips for keeping you safe on the road this fall.<\/p>\n

Be cautious while
\ndriving at dusk or dawn.<\/strong> Deer are most active during sunrise and sunset, pay
\nclose attention and always wear your seatbelt.<\/p>\n

Watch for deer
\ncrossing signs. <\/strong>Be alert and observe your surroundings. Deer are abundant
\nin forested and rural areas, but they also wander into suburban neighborhoods
\nlooking for food.<\/p>\n

Deer travel in packs.<\/strong>
\nIf you spot one, chances are good there could be others.<\/p>\n

Use your high-beams.<\/strong> The U.S. Forest Service<\/a> suggests, while driving at night use your high-beam headlights when there is no opposing traffic. The headlight beam will illuminate the eyes of deer and provide them greater driver reaction time.<\/p>\n

Get comprehensive auto insurance. <\/strong>Carrying the basic car insurance required will not be enough. \u201cComprehensive car insurance provides additional coverage, including protection for accidents involving animals,\u201d says Dustyn Shroff<\/a> Vice President of GreatFlorida Insurance<\/a>, Florida\u2019s largest independent auto insurance agency<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t swerve to avoid a collision.<\/strong> AAA<\/a> recommends, \u201cIf a collision is unavoidable, apply your brakes firmly and stay in your lane. Swerving to avoid an animal can often cause a more serious crash or result in drivers losing control of vehicles.\u201d<\/p>\n

If you do hit a deer,
\ndo not touch the animal!<\/strong>The U.S. Forest Service warns, the deer in
\nattempting to move or get away, could hurt you or itself. If possible, move
\nyour vehicle to the side of the road and call the police. Also, be sure to call
\nyour auto insurance agent<\/a> and file a claim.<\/p>\n
