State officials estimate by 2030, one in four Florida drivers will be 65 or older.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is important for senior drivers to maintain their driving independence, but at some point elderly drivers and their family must have the difficult conversation about when driving capabilities are beginning to diminish, causing potential danger for others on the road and themselves,\u201d said <a _blank=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/dustyns\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dustyn Shroff<\/a>, Vice President of GreatFlorida Insurance.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, senior drivers fear losing their independence and push the limits- Florida currently leads the country in elderly driver deaths.<\/p>\n<p>Liberty Mutual recently conducted a survey of 1,000 adults 75 and older. Concerns that may prevent seniors from giving up their keys included losing independence, becoming less active, difficulty finding alternative forms of transportation and feeling isolated.<\/p>\n<p>So when do you know it is time to have that awkward discussion with your spouse, family member, friend or self?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.aarp.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Florida Retired People\">AARP<\/a> has some warning signs that indicate a person should begin to limit or stop driving.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Frequent accidents or close calls<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Finding dents and scrapes on the car, fences, mailboxes, garage door, curbs, etc.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Getting lost, especially in familiar locations<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Having trouble seeing or following traffic signals, road signs and pavement markings<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Slow response times, confusing the gas and brake or experiencing trouble moving between the two pedals<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Misjudging distances or the speed of other vehicles<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Experiencing anger or causing other drivers to honk<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Easily distracted or having difficulty concentrating while driving<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Difficulty backing up or changing lanes<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Receiving multiple traffic tickets or \u201cwarnings\u201d from law enforcement<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, (DHS&amp;MV), requires that drivers age 79 or older who renew their license undergo a basic vision test. A re-examination may be given based on a change in the driver\u2019s physical or mental condition as well as their driving record.<\/p>\n<p>A family member, doctor or law enforcement officer can recommend a re-exam with immunity from civil and criminal liability.
