{"id":9352,"date":"2021-09-29T15:44:43","date_gmt":"2021-09-29T19:44:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.greatflorida.com\/?p=9352"},"modified":"2026-05-12T18:40:51","modified_gmt":"2026-05-12T22:40:51","slug":"new-laws-taking-effect-friday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greatflorida.com\/blog\/2021\/new-laws-taking-effect-friday\/","title":{"rendered":"New Laws Taking Effect Friday"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"has-regular-font-size\">New laws passed during this spring\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flsenate.gov\/session\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">legislative session<\/a> are set to hit the books on Friday. \u201cMinimum wage workers will receive a boost in pay,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/dustyns\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" =_blank>Dustyn Shroff<\/a>, Vice President of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greatflorida.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GreatFlorida Insurance<\/a>, Florida\u2019s top independent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greatflorida.com\/florida-homeowners-insurance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">homeowners insurance<\/a> agency.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-regular-font-size\">Minimum wage will increase from $8.65 to $10 and hour. It will continue to increase until 2026 when it reaches $15 and hour.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greatflorida.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/index-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"176\" height=\"177\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.greatflorida.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/index-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9361 lazyload\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greatflorida.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/index-1.jpg 176w, https:\/\/www.greatflorida.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/index-1-150x151.jpg 150w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 176px) 100vw, 176px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 176px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 176\/177;\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greatflorida.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/index-1.jpg 176w, https:\/\/www.greatflorida.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/index-1-150x151.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 176px) 100vw, 176px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>https:\/\/dos.myflorida.com\/<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"has-regular-font-size\">Other new laws taking effect include the following:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"has-regular-font-size wp-block-list\">\n<li>Child welfare (SB 80): This measure makes comprehensive changes in the child-welfare system on issues such as out-of-home placement, steps for reinstatement of parental rights and the process for transitioning youths out of foster care.<\/li>\n<li>Child safety (SB 252): The bill creates the \u201cChild Safety Alarm Act,\u201d which requires vehicles used by child-care facilities to be equipped with alarm systems that prompt drivers to ensure no children remain on board when the vehicles are parked.<\/li>\n<li>Tobacco and nicotine products (SB1080): This bill raises the minimum age to purchase and possess tobacco and nicotine products from 18 to 21. There is an exemption for those in the military and people who are doing so for employment. Smoking and vaping near or on school property is also illegal for anyone under 21.<\/li>\n<li>Crime Stoppers (HB 363): The bill makes it a third-degree felony to disclose protected communications provided to a Crime Stoppers organization.<\/li>\n<li>Specialty tags (SB 676): This measure makes a series of changes involving specialty license plates, including establishing an \u201cArmy of Occupation\u201d design for veterans who served overseas in wars between May 9, 1945, and October 2, 1990.<\/li>\n<li>DNA (HB 833): The bill, partly, defines DNA samples as \u201cexclusive property\u201d of people submitting the samples and limits the use of the DNA for criminal databases unless people provide \u201cexpress consent\u201d for analysis. It restricts the use of DNA.<\/li>\n<li>Written threats (HB 921): The measure expands and updates laws about written threats and cyberstalking, including threats involving mass shootings or terrorism.<\/li>\n<li>Corporate espionage (HB 1523): The measure, partially, creates second-degree felony charges for \u201ctrafficking in trade secrets,\u201d with the charges bumped to first-degree felonies if the trafficking is aimed at benefiting foreign governments.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cMany of the new laws advocate for the protection of children,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/dustyns\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" =_blank>Dustyn Shroff<\/a>, Vice President of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greatflorida.com\/florida-homeowners-insurance\">GreatFlo<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greatflorida.com\/florida-homeowners-insurance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rida Insurance<\/a>, Florida\u2019s top independent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greatflorida.com\/florida-homeowners-insurance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">homeowners insurance<\/a> agency.<\/p>\n<p>All the 2021 laws signed by Gov. DeSantis can be found at the <a href=\"http:\/\/laws.flrules.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Florida Department of State<\/a>.
